About me and my zero waste journey

My name is Linnea Ömmelspång and i try and live a more sustainable and low waste lifestyle in Sweden.

So how did i get here and were did my intrest for the low waste or othwerwise called zero waste lifestyle began?

My interest in the low waste or zero waste movement be began around 2 or 3 years ago when I saw a youtube video about that small pieces of plastic, too small to be seen by human eye leaves a plastic container and makes its way in to the food  that you store in the container, if you heat container up in the microwave. And that plastic can then make it´s the way into our bodies through the food we eat and make us really sick and not just that, the plastic is also believed to be the cause to a number of different diseases. As you can figure out yourselves  I got really frightened by this very thought of me having all of this plastic in my body that could be potentially harmful not only to myself but also to any of my future children.

So I started small. and thought that I must be crazy and I must be overreacting on this video and nobody else can have seen this video and began buying only glass food containers.

But that was when I stumbled upon two people who changed my life and those people were Bea Johnson and Lauren Singer. Both of these amazing ladies said to be living a  lifestyle called the zero waste lifestyle and both of them had lived without plastic for years and were producing almost no waste at all on top of it all and were saving money on not having to buy plastic stuff. So I started to read and do my research on how I could become like them.

Today I have been living this lifestyle for almost 2 years and it feels like a lifetime ago since I used a plastic container to store food in or since I used plastic menstrual pads. But I am not perfect. I still do buy plastic stuff and I am far from living an entirely zero waste life. With that said I still want to show people that living more low waste can be simple, cost-effective, timely and fun. It is possible to change your life around just as I did.

But if I still buy plastic your not living a low waste lifestyle you say; well my definition of this lifestyle is that I try to be more conscious of what I buy, but first of all I try to refuse trash were I can reduce my own use of trash. I have my own glass containers to put my food in when I go up to the charcuterie section in my grocery store, I bring my own cutlery set, cup, straw, and food containers when I go to fast food restaurants for example. So to live a low waste life to is more about thinking if I can reduce my own waste in any easy ways and also not buy stuff unless I can buy a product that stops me from needing to buy a product that is single use or only good for a few uses.

My simple rule is to think before I consume and think before I use single-use plastics and products to can´t be recycled.

I believe that if you think you can do some little thing, and one little thing is always better then nothing

A low waste lifestyle blog and Instagram is my way of documenting my own journey as well as inspire others to live a more low waste life
